Florida YMCA YIG - Jr. Ambassador ProgramJr. Student Ambassadors

In 2008, students who did not currently have a Youth In Government program available to them through their YMCA or school were invited to be a part of our Student Ambassador Program.

Beginning with our Jr. Assembly, individual middle school students were allowed to take part in the process so that they could return home and start a YIG chapter of their very own.  We have been overwhelmed with the repsonse, and are excited to keep the program going.

Jr. Student Ambassadors are invited to repsresent their school and community at our annual Jr. Assembly in May of each year.

Select 8th grade students may also attend our high school State Assembly as a Page delegate.  The high school State Assembly is held in spring of each year and hosted in Tallhassee in our state's Capitol buildings.

Download the Jr. Ambassador Reservation Form.   Make sure you keep reading for the entire story on this year's Jr. Ambassador program.

So, you've been nominated by your school.  What's next?

Clearly, you will need to talk to your parents about this opportunity.

Make sure that you have spoken with your school and visited the sections of our website before you do this.

Find out if your school has nominated any other students and if there is an adult in mind to go with you all on this trip. Informed parents are happy parents -- the more you know, the more excited and supportive they will be about helping you take advantage of this opportunity.

Things you need to consider...
  • You will be missing school.  Yup, 2 full days – Thursday, May 24th & Friday, May 25th of 2012.
    • As you have been nominated by your school this should be an excused absence, but remember that you will be responsible for making up any missed work or assignments.

  • There is some prep work involved.  You will work with the YIG GreenBook to help your ideas come alive!
    • THINK: You will need to come up with an idea you believe will create a better place for the people who live in our community...
    • RESEARCH: How will you solve the issue you have identified? Why should others agree/disagree with you...
    • WRITE: Building your idea into a bill/law and submitting it to the State Office
    • PRESENT: Getting ready to share your bill with others at the State Assembly...

  • There are some costs involved.
    • The YIG Student Ambassador State Assembly fee is $285*
    • Your fee includes...
      • Access to Florida YIG’s Deledex prior to State Assembly
      • All Jr. Assembly Materials
      • All Jr. Assembly Activities
      • 4 days and 3 nights of accomodations
      • All meals from Thursday @ dinner through Sunday @ lunch
      • Jr. Assembly '10 T-shirt
*$235 = Cost for Jr. YIG Chapter members. Click here to read more about starting a Jr. YIG Chapter

  2. You will receive a confirmation email within 2 business days of submitting by email  or upon our receiveing your reservation by snail mail.  If you do not, please contact the State Office to confirm the receipt of your reservation.

You have reserved your spot** to attend Jr. Assembly... What's next?
  1. Once we receive your form we will create your Jr. Deledex account and you will receive and email with your log-in name (your firstname.lastname – all lower case) and password (a bunch of random letters and numbers – these are case sensitive, so make sure you copy it in EXACTLY as it is sent to you).

  2. You will now be able to log in to the Jr. Deledex. As an individual participant you will be part of the Jr. Student Ambassador and the Sunshine State Delegation.

  3. The first time you log-in you will need to fill-out some information about you (your parents' help for a few questions may be needed – your emergency contact person, etc.). This information will be used for registration and help in filling out your registration forms.

  4. After you enter this information, you will also need to change your password to something easier to remember. On the left hand side of the screen you will see a box called “My Account”, click the link that says change password. Make sure you have the original password you were sent handy and that you copy it in EXACTLY as it is sent to you.
** You will still need to register for the Assembly and send in your form and remaining Assembly fees. You will be able to find/print your registration form and pay via the Jr. Deledex.

Now that you have a Jr. Deledex account (and you’ve changed your password)... What’s next?
  1. You will need to download the GreenBook. Click here to get the GreenBook

  2. The GreenBook has the materials and guidelines needed to begin the process of creating your very own bill. The GreenBook is divided into four responsibilities that you will need to complete. The completion of each responsibility will take you a step closer to being ready for Jr. Assembly.
    1. THINK: Have an Idea
    2. RESEARCH: Develop your Idea
    3. WRITE: Create your Bill
    4. PRESENT: Preparing your presentation

  3. You will also need to make sure that you and your parents read and fill out your Jr. Assembly Registration Form. On the left hand side of the screen you will see a box called “Assembly Preparation”, click the link that says “Registration Form” to get a copy of your form. You will notice that this form asks for both you and your parent’s signature. Please make sure that your review the “Code of Conduct” (also in the “Assembly Preparation” box) before signing the form. Your signature on the Registration Form means that you agree to the code and that your parents understand the possible consequences if you do not.

  4. Once you have filled out the form, you will need to mail it to the YIG State Office.

  1. You will also need to submit the balance of your Assembly fees ($285 - your already paid deposit = $185).
    1. Send a check made payable to Youth In Government (please write the delegate’s name on the memo line of the check) to the YIG State Office along with your registration form.
